Home automation installation as a career

“Pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work.” - Aristotle.

Let’s face it, a conventional desk job is not exciting. Working 9 to 5 in front of a computer is what I always wanted to avoid. I was in a quest for a profession which will be challenging as well as satisfying. My first attempt was to become a freelance programmer (as I had previous training). I thought I would work 3 days a week and travel on other days. a friend of mine was already doing this, and he was very successful. At first, I was patient. I quickly learnt how to remain calm whenever server crashes or a critical website gets infected with malware. 2 years passed, the pressure of maintaining IT systems from a faraway land was giving me nothing but stress. I suffered from sleep deprivation. Even when I was travelling, I would get messages about system errors. All I wanted was to quit my freelance programming career and find something new.

Then I attended a seminar about automation technology. There I met a home automation installer. From him, I found out how exciting this technology is. The home automation system can make a home smart. In a smart home, every device is connected via a network. This large network of connected devices shares information and creates an ecosystem. From music system, lighting to window blinds and heating, everything can be made part of the control system. This gives the homeowner absolute control over his home. Using a remote or an app, every device can be controlled like magic.

I was completely drawn into this technology. I just had to learn more about it. I spent hours after hour researching about how this system works. What are the biggest brands in automation technologies? As I had IT background, it was relatively easy for me to understand how this system works. To see the work in action, I contacted a home automation company called AVITHA and applied for an internship. They gave me the opportunity and I was sent to receive training from RGB Communications in Hungerford, England. It was middle of winter and there were only two others in the classroom. The training lasted for 3 days. I loved every moment of it.

I received a certificate from the SAVANT home automation system for the training. After returning, engineers from AVITHA took me everywhere with them. I worked in home cinema projects, door entry system, lighting control system. I even worked in a huge multi-million-pound property that belongs to a Hollywood celebrity (whose name I cannot disclose).

I like this job. When you spend days integrating every device to a home automation system and see them come alive, it feels great. After a two years working as a home automation installer, I found out as a career home automation industry is very challenging and rewarding.
